A spokesman for the South Sudanese president said the cargo flight had 20 people on board, including five crew members, all Russian, and 15 passengers. If everything went according to schedule, the plane was carrying cargo from Juba airport to Paloch in the Upper Nile region.
According to initial reports, the plane crashed onto a small island in the White Nile, about 800 meters from the flight path. Two of the 20 people on board, including a child and an astronaut, miraculously survived.
However, South Sudanese police said that around 40 bodies had been found at the crash site. The death toll could rise as the area where the plane crashed is densely populated.
