"The Costa Rican government regrets the death of 10 American passengers and two Costa Rican pilots in the plane crash," Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis wrote on social media, according to AFP.
A Cessna 208 Caravan plane operated by Nature Air crashed on December 31 in the Guanacaste region, northwestern Costa Rica.
Photos posted on the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Security's account show charred wreckage, with only the tail of the plane clearly visible. The cause of the crash is unclear. Mr. Solis said the investigation would begin on the morning of January 1.
Guanacaste is a popular tourist destination in the Central American country, especially during this time of year, when its pristine beaches and jungles offer a welcome respite from the cold northern hemisphere winter. The United States is the country with the most visitors to Costa Rica.
