Quang Ninh District Police (Quang Binh) confirmed that Ms. Le Thi An (born in 1959, residing in Tan Hien village, Hien Ninh commune), is the suspect in the case of acid being thrown on her daughter-in-law who died at her home.

According to initial information, Ms. An was found dead by her family at 7:00 a.m. on January 14. Because Ms. An was a suspect in the acid attack case that injured others, upon receiving the report, Quang Ninh District Police went to the scene to investigate and clarify the cause of the incident. However, the victim's family stated that the victim died of exhaustion due to severe depression and diabetes. Therefore, Ms. An's family requested that no autopsy be performed and pledged not to file further complaints, so the authorities stopped all investigation work.

Previously, at around 8:30 p.m. on January 1, 2018, in front of the family's Kim Phuc gold shop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang (born in 1982, Mrs. An's daughter-in-law and residing at the same address) had a conflict with her mother-in-law after returning from a New Year's Eve party with her husband and children. In a fit of anger, Mrs. An took a cup of acid commonly used to make gold and splashed it on her daughter-in-law, causing Ms. Hang to suffer conjunctival burns in both eyes and first and second degree burns in several areas of her body.
