Tips for staying calm around children

Every mother has moments when she can’t control herself and gets angry with her naughty child. Here are four ways to help you stay calm:

1. Keep children busy

If you are busy with something, cleaning the house, cooking, or entertaining guests, and your child keeps nagging you to play with him, don't get angry. Stop what you are doing for just 1 minute, focus on talking to your child as if you are discussing something very important, saying: "Mommy really wants to have a beautiful picture of you. Now bring out your paper and pen, mommy will draw, and then you can help mommy color it beautifully."

My friend, while busy cleaning the house, responded like that to her 3-year-old daughter who was asking her mother to play with her. And the wonderful thing happened, she had an hour free to do her work, while her daughter was still engrossed in coloring the picture her mother drew.

If your child has another hobby, don't forget to direct him/her to that hobby when you don't have time for him/her.

2. Ask children to help

The next time you hear your child say, “I’m bored!”, give him something to do. It can be a simple chore, like watering the flowers, vacuuming the floor, making his bed, or setting the dinner table.

There are things that children of any age can do, as long as mothers are bold enough to let them do it.

3. Teach your child a skill

There are things you need to do to keep your house clean and tidy, and there are things you want to do for fun. Categorize them as “fun” and “tasks.”

Now you teach your child those chores, including throwing water balloons he still begs to play with you in the yard, cleaning the garage, cleaning out the closet, cooking dinner... anything, as long as it's with your child.

4. Take time for yourself

Every day you have 30 minutes to “take advantage” of for yourself, the key issue is whether you want to spend time for yourself or not. You should do so, to reduce stress and work effectively. Think more about yourself, rest to regain a refreshing spirit. This way you benefit, and your family benefits too.

Spend 30 minutes at the gym to exercise, keep fit, read a book, watch a good movie, sip a glass of wine... let yourself escape from the daily "chaos" even for a short time. You will quickly regain your energy and find yourself more lovable, not grumpy or angry.
