Tips to avoid interference and uneven signals for Wifi
New research from Post Office Telecoms shows people are still making common mistakes when using Wi-Fi that negatively impact speeds.
Placing a Wi-Fi router next to electrical equipment can lead to “significant signal interference,” and a recent study found that 27% of people surveyed made that mistake.

Additionally, 24% of people place their routers next to windows, on walls, or even at the top of their homes, resulting in patchy signals.
Meredith Sharples, director of Post Office Telecoms, said: "We are increasingly reliant on the internet for many aspects of our lives. However, many people are affected by slow internet connections because they don't know the simple steps they can take to speed up and secure their broadband connection."
A survey last week by Cable.com of more than 16,000 UK residents found that Plusnet and Virgin Media were the most reliable broadband providers in the UK, while TalkTalk, BT and EE all lagged behind in the survey.
Another research project conducted by Opinium Research in October based on 2,001 respondents in the UK found that many households are "suffering in silence" when dealing with internet connection problems.
Of these, 40% of those surveyed completely gave up, not trying to fix or repair the problem, while 12% of the others bought new devices such as laptops or smartphones to improve their home Internet speed.
Telecommunications experts have come up with some tips to increase Wi-Fi speed: • Reposition the router:Place your router away from windows, walls, and electrical appliances — even baby monitors, fish tanks, and Christmas lights can interfere with the signal. • Master the connection:Make sure your router is plugged into the main socket and not an extension socket. Otherwise it will affect your internet speed. • Protect your privacy and update your browser to the latest version:If you don't set a password, other people can use your Wi-Fi and slow down your connection. The latest version of your Internet browser will also improve your download speeds. • Determine the speed you need:If you have a household with multiple users, especially in the evenings when everyone is on the network, then you need higher speeds. |
