'Cambodian Messi' receives 23 times more salary than Cong Phuong
Leaving Fujieda MYFC, Chan Vathanaka – the man dubbed “Cambodian Messi” decided to join Pahang FA Club in the Malaysia Super League. Immediately, he received a salary of 15,000 USD/month (nearly 350 million VND), which is 23 times higher than Cong Phuong – the man dubbed “Vietnamese Messi”.
In mid-2017, Chan Vathanaka decided to leave Boeung Ket Angkor (Cambodia) and join Fujieda MYFC - a team in the Japanese Third Division, on a 6-month loan contract. During his half-year in the Land of the Rising Sun, the striker dubbed the "Cambodian Messi" only played for 5 minutes and did not leave any impression.

At the end of 2017, Chan Vathanaka was forced to leave Fujieda MYFC if he did not want to waste his talent. Very quickly, he was invited by Pahang FA Club in the Malaysia Super League and recently the two sides signed a contract. There is no official information about the contract term between the two sides, but according to the Malaysian press, Chan Vathanaka will receive a salary of up to 15,000 USD/month (nearly 350 million VND).
350 million VND/month is a number that makes fans startled, especially when compared to the income in V.League. Cong Phuong - who is considered as "Vietnamese Messi", currently only receives a salary of about 15 million VND/month at HAGL Club. Previously, when he went to Japan to play for Mito HollyHock on loan, he received a higher salary, but it is still difficult to compare with the salary that "Cambodian Messi" receives at Pahang FA Club.
From the 2018 season, the Malaysian national football league has stipulated that teams will be strengthened by one more foreign player from countries in the region. Pahang FA is trying to strengthen its squad before the Malaysian National Championship kicks off in February this year. Last season, Pahang FA finished as runners-up in the Malaysia Super League.
