| Messi was once accused of defrauding the tax authorities of $5 million. |
June 2013,Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio, are facing trial for allegedly evading taxes for three years, from 2007 to 2009. The total amount is $5.3 million, related to image rights.
They are suspected of using foreign companies – specifically Belize (a small Central American country, formerly a British colony) and Uruguay – to sell image rights.
After paying $15 million, Messi was acquitted of tax evasion charges. The management of his image rights was handled by a third party, and the tax evasion by this organization went undetected by Messi and his son, according to the court.
After more than a year of calm, this scandal has resurfaced. The court in Gava, where Messi lives, stated: "In cases like this, it is not necessary to know the exact business figures or accounting records; one can still detect fraud."
Messi will be summoned to court in the near future for further investigation. The Argentine striker requested that Alfonso Nebot, lawyer Angel Suarez, and Raul Sanllehi, Barcelona's Marketing Director, testify as witnesses, but the court refused.
