The match between Mexico and Cameroon took place in heavy rain in Natal. However, the slippery pitch did not significantly affect the skillful play of the Central American team. With superior individual technique, Mexico easily controlled the game, cornering their opponents. Statistics from the first half show that Mexico controlled the ball for 61% of the time.
With their dominant performance, Mexico should have gone into halftime leading. However, fatal mistakes by referee Wilmar Roldan ruined everything. If the Colombian referee had been more alert, Giovani Dos Santos should have scored at least one goal in the first half. In the 11th minute, the 25-year-old striker raced down the field and shot past goalkeeper Charles Itandje. Slow-motion replays showed that the goal was perfectly valid. Yet, referee Wilmar Roldan ruled Giovani Dos Santos offside and disallowed the goal. In the 29th minute, the referee again denied Dos Santos an offside.
Despite repeatedly facing unfavorable refereeing decisions, Mexico remained undeterred. They continued to dominate the game with their intricate passing game. Their tireless efforts were finally rewarded in the 61st minute when Giovani Dos Santos' shot was saved by goalkeeper Itandje, allowing Oribe Peralta to score the opening goal with a rebound.
Despite taking the lead, Mexico showed no intention of slowing down their attack. They continued to press their opponents and created numerous scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Cameroon displayed a stiff and disjointed performance. The African team almost exclusively relied on pushing the ball forward to Samuel Eto'o. However, all the former Barcelona striker managed was a shot that hit the outside of Mexico's post in the first half.
Ultimately, Mexico defeated Cameroon 1-0. This result propelled them to second place in Group A with 3 points, the same as Brazil, but with an inferior goal difference.
