However, on December 3, the North welcomed a new cold spell with stronger intensity and lasting longer.
“It can be said that the cold spell in the North has passed the coldest days on November 26 and 27. In the coming days, the temperature in the North will gradually increase by 1-2 degrees Celsius, but it will not be as hot as before. On November 30 and December 1, the highest temperature in the North will be around 24-25 degrees Celsius. However, on December 3, the North will welcome a new cold spell with stronger intensity and longer duration. The daytime temperature in Hanoi is around 15-16 degrees Celsius, some other provinces are around 12-14 degrees Celsius,” said Mr. Hai.
Because this year our country’s weather is affected by the El-Nino phenomenon, winter comes later than every year. We have had an unprecedentedly warm autumn, with temperatures in November 2015 being 3-5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years. In December 2015, January and February 2016 – the main winter months in the North – they are not as cold as every year, with temperatures 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than the average. However, the North may still experience severe cold spells.
Regarding the possibility of frost and snowfall in Sa Pa (Lao Cai) and some northern mountainous provinces, Mr. Hai added: Every year in Sa Pa there are about 2-3 snowfalls, but usually in late December or January and February of the year.
“When the temperature in Sa Pa drops below 5 degrees Celsius; the Hoang Lien Son peak drops to 0 degrees Celsius, snow falls. There is little chance of snow in Sa Pa in early December, but from Christmas onwards, there may be frost, ice or snow,” said Mr. Hai.
