The North is cold in the middle of summer

Cold air causes showers and thunderstorms, combined with a high altitude weather system, making the weather in the North turn cold this morning.

This morning, the temperature in the northern provinces dropped sharply, the lowest in the plains was generally 20-21 degrees Celsius, and in many mountainous areas below 20 degrees Celsius. In Hanoi, the lowest temperature at meteorological stations was generally 20-21 degrees Celsius, bringing a surprisingly cold feeling to the people of the capital during the summer.

At 1 p.m., many areas in the North were only 22-25 degrees Celsius. In Ha Giang and Cao Bang, the temperature was about 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than in the morning; while Mau Son (Lang Son) and Sa Pa (Lao Cai) and Pha Din Pass were still 15 degrees Celsius.

According to Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this cold spell is rare but not unusual. During this period in 1979, the meteorological department recorded 21 degrees Celsius in Hanoi, and in 1990, it was 19 degrees Celsius.

"May usually has about 3-4 weak cold fronts causing showers and thunderstorms, combined with a high-altitude weather system, making the sky more cloudy and gloomy, causing a cold feeling, but it only lasts for a short time, only 1-2 days," said Mr. Hai, adding that June could still see a cold front affecting the North.

Another expert also said that the cold weather in the North is due to the impact of cold air that has strengthened since last night, combined with drizzle and low temperatures.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that tonight the cold air mass will weaken, but the rain will continue, with temperatures at a low of 21-23 degrees Celsius in the plains and 19-21 degrees Celsius in the mountains.

Tomorrow, the temperature in the North will increase but not much, generally 26-28 degrees Celsius, cool weather. This pattern will last until the end of the week.
