Personal income tax exemption for foreign experts from May 1

From May 1, a number of subjects will be added to the list of individuals exempted from personal income tax, including foreign experts implementing foreign non-governmental aid programs and projects in Vietnam.

This is a decision recently approved by the Prime Minister with the condition that the subject must have foreign nationality, have a contract signed with a foreign non-governmental organization or with the project management agency or with the owner of a foreign non-governmental aid account of Vietnam directly implementing aid activities according to approved documents.

The above Decision applies to foreign experts selected to directly implement activities of foreign non-governmental aid programs and projects, based on agreement between foreign non-governmental organizations and the project management agency of Vietnam.

The Decision also clearly stipulates that the tax-free income of foreign experts specified above is income directly from implementing activities of foreign non-governmental aid programs and projects.

Also in the decision on the same day, another subject that will be exempted from personal income tax from May 1 is Vietnamese people working at representative offices of international organizations of the United Nations system in Vietnam.

Specifically, individuals exempted from personal income tax must ensure the conditions of having Vietnamese nationality and being employees of representative offices of international organizations of the United Nations system in Vietnam with confirmation sent to the tax authority.

Tax-free income of individuals specified above is income from salaries and wages paid by representative agencies of international organizations of the United Nations system in Vietnam.

However, according to the decision, tax exemption does not apply to Vietnamese individuals who are recruited and work hourly at representative offices of international organizations of the United Nations system in Vietnam.
