Opening the most dangerous road in the world
El Caminito de Rey, a 100m high path that passes through the Gaitanes Gorge, is one of Spain’s most popular tourist attractions. Five tourists have fallen to their deaths while walking on this path.
The world's most dangerous walkway reopens for tourism this week. Perched 100 metres above sea level, El Caminito del Rey offers breathtaking views over the Gualdalhorce River.
It was closed after five people fell and died while crossing it in 1999 and 2000. In 2015, the road was restored to safety in a 5.5 million euro project and just two years after reopening, the road welcomed 600,000 tourists.

Due to the large number of tourists eager to explore, only 300,000 visitors are allowed here each year, with 1,100 visitors per day. The planned opening date is April 22nd until the end of the year, with an entrance fee of 10 euros, from Tuesday to Friday. It is estimated that it will take visitors 4 to 5 hours to walk the entire length.

Before its renovation and installation of protective fences, El Caminito de Rey was an adventure sports tourist destination, attracting thrill-seekers from all over the world due to its unsafe condition. The narrow concrete walkways, which cling loosely to the cliffs, have large gaps that pose a challenge to experienced climbers.
Although there have been five deaths, this has not deterred daredevils from betting their lives on the conquest, even as local authorities have imposed a fine of 5,000 euros on those who cross this path.

However, the road has been restored by the Andalusian and Malagan authorities and is under the management of the two entities Hermandos Campano and Bobastro 2000.
