Surgery to remove bladder stones unexpectedly discovered condom

Doctors from the Department of Urology, Post Office Hospital (Hanoi), have just removed a condom covered with gravel residue from the body of a 37-year-old male patient.

Mr. Van, 37 years old (Huu Hoa, Thanh Tri, Hanoi) was admitted to the hospital because of painful urination, frequent urination and blood in the urine. After ultrasound and X-ray, the doctors at the Post Office Hospital diagnosed the patient with a 3 cm bladder stone and prescribedendoscopic bladder stone lithotripsy.

When performing lithotripsy, doctors were surprised to find not stones in the patient's bladder but a whole condom covered with a layer of calcium deposits. The condom was safely removed from the patient's body by endoscopy.

Dr. Duong Van Trung, Head of the Department of Urology, said that the patient said that a year ago he folded a condom and gradually inserted it into the urethra, then slid it into the bladder.The patient worked as a mechanic, had a wife and two children. At home, the patient lived normally, however, when the doctors met him, they noticed that he was acting abnormally.

The hospital has also encountered a number of patients who have inserted foreign objects into their bodies, especially in the urethra. Doctors believe that these people have a disease of pleasure, and do not see the consequences and harms of it.
