The Vinh - Thanh Thuy expressway project officially commenced on May 18, 2026, marking a significant step in Nghe An's strategy to complete its external transportation infrastructure system.

In particular, the inclusion of the Vinh - Thanh Thuy expressway economic corridor and National Highway 46 into the revised Nghe An Provincial Planning document for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, is of special significance, demonstrating a long-term development vision based on strategic infrastructure.

The Vinh - Thanh Thuy Expressway Economic Corridor and National Highway 46 are part of the overall Nghe An Provincial Planning.

Accordingly, the Vinh - Thanh Thuy Expressway Economic Corridor and National Highway 46 are identified as new development axes, supplementing the province's economic spatial structure to more effectively exploit the potential of the central and western areas.

From a geoeconomic perspective, this corridor holds a unique position, directly connecting the Vinh urban center with Nam Dan, Thanh Chuong (formerly), and the future Thanh Thuy Border Gate area. This connecting axis also links to Vinh Airport, Cua Lo Port, National Highway 7, the Ho Chi Minh Highway, and the national transport network.

One of the greatest values this economic corridor brings is its ability to restructure Nghe An's development space. For many years, the province's economic growth has been concentrated mainly in Vinh city, the Southeast Economic Zone, and the coastal strip; many western localities have yet to fully exploit their potential due to limited infrastructure connectivity. The new expressway, along with National Highway 46, will create momentum to expand development space in an East-West direction.

From an investment attraction perspective, the Vinh - Thanh Thuy expressway economic corridor opens up opportunities for the formation of large-scale logistics, trade, and service centers along the route.

The advantageous connectivity between seaports, airports, industrial zones, and raw material areas in the West creates favorable conditions for developing complete supply chains.

Businesses involved in the production and processing of agricultural and forestry products have more opportunities to reduce transportation costs, expand their consumer markets, and enhance their competitiveness.

This corridor is also expected to become a driving force for the development of commercial agriculture and high-tech agriculture. Along National Highway 46, there are many concentrated production areas, so when the transportation infrastructure is upgraded synchronously, the distance between raw material areas and processing, logistics, and export centers will be narrowed, creating conditions for the formation of modern agricultural value chains.

This is an important prerequisite for increasing the added value of agricultural products and promoting the transformation from small-scale production to large-scale production linked to the market.

Tourism is also considered a sector that directly benefits from the new economic corridor. The route connecting Vinh with localities such as Kim Lien and Hoa Quan brings together many unique tourism resources of Nghe An, from the Kim Lien National Special Historical Site to the ecological areas along the Lam River and the landscapes of the Mekong Delta.

Once the expressway is completed, access to destinations will be improved, facilitating the creation of integrated tourism products linking the sea, urban areas, culture, and ecology. This will enable tourists to extend their stay, increase revenue, and enhance the attractiveness of Nghe An tourism.

Furthermore, the Vinh - Thanh Thuy expressway economic corridor also signifies the expansion of the province's international trade opportunities. Along with the National Highway 7A corridor connecting to the Nam Can International Border Gate, the new expressway will contribute to completing the network connecting with neighboring Laos, gradually forming cross-border logistics chains.

This is a crucial element in the strategy to transform Nghe An into a trade hub for the North Central region with the Central Lao provinces and the Greater Mekong Subregion.

The inclusion of the Vinh - Thanh Thuy Expressway Economic Corridor and National Highway 46 in the province's revised planning demonstrates a development vision based on infrastructure development and regional connectivity.

If highways are the "runway" for future growth, then economic corridors are the spaces where investment, production, services, and trade resources converge and spread.

When the project is completed, expected in 2028, Nghe An will have another strategic development axis, creating momentum for expanding its economic space westward, enhancing its competitiveness, and consolidating the province's central position in the North Central region.
