Opening the auxiliary spillway of Don Hung dam in Yen Thanh
(Baonghean.vn) - Faced with the situation of Don Hung dam being full of water after storm No. 10, Yen Thanh district and Bac Nghe An Irrigation Company Limited coordinated to open the auxiliary spillway to release floodwater at Don Hung dam reservoir.
Don Hung Dam is located in two mountainous communes of Hung Thanh and Lang Thanh, with a reserve of 3.8 million m3Water. Due to being built since 1973, many items have now seriously deteriorated, including the dam body with a length of nearly 1km, which has seriously degraded, with many places showing leaks and subsidence, and is at risk of dam failure when there is prolonged heavy rain.

Faced with the complicated weather situation, heavy rain may continue to occur, to protect the safety of the dam project, from the afternoon of September 15 and September 16, Yen Thanh district mobilized 5 mechanical machines to work continuously, along with technical support from the governing sector to implement the plan to expand the secondary spillway to discharge floodwater.
The auxiliary spillway is nearly 30 m long; the width has been increased from 18 m to 25 m; the bottom of the spillway has been lowered by 0.2 m compared to the old design, to quickly drain the flood, avoid the risk of dam failure, and ensure the safety of nearly 700 households in the downstream area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district said that after the developments of storm No. 10, from September 16, the district is conducting inspections and reviews of all dams in the district managed by Bac Nghe An Irrigation Company Limited and the locality to have a plan to overcome landslides and prevent dam body leakage.
For severely damaged dams, the Provincial People's Committee will be requested to provide financial support combined with a part of the district budget to promptly repair them to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season and store water for production./.
