After becoming bogged down in Iraq and Syria, Washington now has another concern. On Monday, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to U.S. security forces about potential attacks by “lone wolves”—American Islamic extremist fighters returning from battlefields in the Middle East.
These warnings stemmed from messages posted on Islamic forums and social media sites calling on supporters to wage wars in the territories of "infidels." The targets of the attacks could be American journalists, who are perceived as biased and hostile towards Islam.
Starting Monday morning, American symbols of power and the offices of major news outlets like the Washington Post, CNN, and Georgia were subjected to increased surveillance. Meanwhile, social media and mobile sites were scrutinized more extensively than usual by the National Security Agency and the National Security Agency's cyber intelligence services.
According to US intelligence agencies, at least 3,000 people from the West are currently involved in extremist Islamic jihadist movements in Syria and Iraq. These individuals are often citizens of countries such as the UK, France, the US, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Faced with this influx of recruits to the battlefields of Iraq and Syria, and concerns about national security if these individuals return home, these countries have raised their security alert levels and are drafting legislation to prevent potential threats from jihadist fighters.
