(Baonghean.vn) - It is currently harvest season but many peanut areas in Quynh Tho, Quynh Thuan, Quynh Dien, An Hoa, Ngoc Son, Quynh Chau of Quynh Luu district have low productivity and poor quality. According to calculations, for 1 hectare of peanuts, farmers lose over 16 million VND.

Some areas in Quynh Tho commune have only a few peanut trees left.

In the spring of 2016, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham in Tho Dong village, Quynh Tho commune planted nearly 1 sao of L14 peanuts. This year, due to the cold weather and prolonged rain, about 50% of the peanut area died. The surviving plants were very difficult to care for, so the peanuts were stunted, grew poorly, and had a low rate of flowering and fruiting. Therefore, this year's peanut crop suffered a great loss. "This crop, if peanuts were harvested, they would only reach 60-70 kg/sao, a decrease of nearly 1.5 quintals/sao compared to previous years," Ms. Tham said.

In the whole Quynh Tho commune, there are 70 hectares of peanuts, of which 35 hectares have crop failure.

The family of Ms. Le Thi Hoai in Tho Dong village is in the same situation. Her family planted peanuts before Tet, but then encountered a severe cold spell, causing many seedlings to die. She also bought seeds to supplement the area of peanuts that had died before and then bought stimulants to spray to help the plants grow well, but the plants still grew poorly. With 1 sao of peanuts, in 2015, the family harvested 2.5 - 3 quintals of fresh peanuts, but in this spring crop, there were only about 60 kg. The peanut crop failed, combined with lower prices compared to previous years, causing her family to have no income. Currently, the price of peanuts at the beginning of the season is only 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, a decrease of 4 - 5,000 VND compared to 2015.

The entire Quynh Tho commune has 70 hectares of peanuts, mainly L14 and L23 varieties. For 1 sao of peanuts, farmers have to spend nearly 1 million VND including seeds, fertilizers, plastic, plowing, not to mention the care. According to statistics, about 35 hectares of peanuts have failed, reducing 40 - 50% of productivity compared to previous years, with an estimated loss of over 1 billion VND.

This year's spring peanut yield in Quynh Luu is low and the quality is worse than every year.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Vice Chairman of Quynh Tho Commune People's Committee said: "The main reason is that Quynh Tho Commune planted peanuts during the prolonged cold season, which greatly affected the growth of crops. Although the Commune People's Committee and the Agriculture Department have directed farmers to focus on overcoming the damage, many peanut areas are still underdeveloped, leading to very low productivity. According to calculations, for 1 hectare of peanuts, farmers lost over 16 million VND.

Currently, Quynh Tho commune has conducted a survey and compiled a list of damaged households to send to the District People's Committee to have a support plan for the people. At the same time, propagandize to farmers to harvest quickly to clean the fields to prepare for summer-autumn crop planting.

Currently, some other peanut growing localities of Quynh Luu district such as Quynh Thuan, Quynh Dien, An Hoa, Ngoc Son, Quynh Chau have not entered the harvest season yet, but through surveys and general assessments, this year's spring peanut output has decreased compared to the same period in 2015.

Mr. Ho Van Lap - Chairman of Ngoc Son Commune People's Committee said: In the spring crop of 2016, the whole commune planted 53.5 hectares of peanuts. Due to the general unfavorable weather, 23.5 hectares were lost. The commune mobilized people to replace them with other crops. The remaining peanut areas all grew poorly, leading to the growth of the plants being slowed down by about 20 days, so the peanuts are still young. But through visiting and checking the fields, we estimated that the commune's peanut output last year was 1.8 - 1.9 quintals/sao, but this year it decreased by 80 - 90 kg/sao, causing farmers to lose their crops.
