The first time the Vietnamese team faced off against the Myanmar team in the Southeast Asian championship was the 1996 Tiger Cup. At that time, the two teams met in the second round of the group stage, and coach Karl-Heinz Weigang's team won 4-1.

Six years later, Vietnam and Myanmar were in the same group at the 2002 Tiger Cup. In this match, Myanmar scored the opening goal, but still lost 2-4, thus being eliminated from the group stage.
