Dishes and health benefits from carp

Carp is a common freshwater fish throughout Vietnam. Besides being a delicious and nutritious food, carp is also used as a tonic for the spleen and stomach, and as a diuretic.

Here are some medicinal dishes made from carp for your reference and application.

Lesson 1To promote a healthy pregnancy: Take one carp (about 500g), leave the scales on, and gut it; 50g of glutinous rice, washed clean; a little orange peel and fresh ginger. Put all ingredients into a pot and simmer until it becomes a porridge. Add a little salt and eat hot.

Alternatively: Take one carp (about 500g), scale it, remove the guts, wash it thoroughly, and boil it in water to make soup; boil 30g of yam root to extract the liquid; wash 60g of glutinous rice, put it in a pot, add the fish soup and yam root extract, and simmer until it becomes porridge. Eat hot. Use for 5-7 days.

Lesson 2:Nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy: Take one carp (about 300g), scale it, gut it, and wash it thoroughly; crush 6g of Saussurea root; slice 10 pieces of fresh ginger thinly. Put the Saussurea root and ginger into the fish's belly, simmer until cooked, add seasoning, and consume within the day. Uses: Strengthens the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, eliminates nausea and vomiting.

Lesson 3:Treatment for edema during pregnancy: Take one carp (about 500g), wash it thoroughly, remove the scales and guts, fry it in a pan until golden brown on both sides, add enough water to simmer over low heat, add 500ml of cow's milk, ginger, and onion, but no salt. Simmer until the broth thickens and the fish is tender. Eat the fish and drink the broth. Use 5-7 times.

Lesson 4:To promote lactation and increase milk production after childbirth: Take one carp (about 300g), one small pork leg, and 3g of *Thong Thao* (a type of herb). Simmer all ingredients until tender. Consume within the day.

Alternatively: One carp, 15g of Codonopsis pilosula, 50g of Astragalus membranaceus. Simmer all ingredients until tender, eat once a day. Repeat several times.

Lesson 5To support the treatment of jaundice, edema, and frequent urination: 1 carp (about 1kg), 50g red beans, onion, ginger, garlic, and seasonings to taste. Instructions: Clean the carp, marinate with seasonings, then fry until golden brown on both sides. Sauté the onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant, then add water and red beans and bring to a boil. Add the carp and simmer until the beans are soft and tender. Can be consumed regularly.

Lesson 6:To aid in the treatment of whooping cough and bronchial asthma: Take one carp (about 250g) and 6g of finely ground Fritillaria bulb, cook them into a soup and consume it throughout the day. Eating this continuously for 1-2 weeks or regularly is very beneficial for people with whooping cough and chronic bronchial asthma.
