A year after the war, Gaza remains deadlocked.
(Baonghean.vn) - From July 8, 2014 to July 8, 2015, a year has passed since Israel launched Operation "Protecting the Borders" in the Gaza Strip. Although it only lasted six months, the consequences of the war have once again plunged the Gaza Strip deeper into darkness.
According to reports, Israel's "Operation Protective Edge" not only resulted in the deaths of nearly 2,100 Palestinians and weakened the military capabilities of Hamas – the force that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 – but also forced 1.8 million people to live in cramped conditions on 362 square kilometers amidst economic stagnation and despair.

The World Bank reports that the unemployment rate in the Palestinian territories is currently the highest in the world, affecting 40% of the population. Significantly, the unemployment rate among young people – who make up the majority of the population – has reached a worrying 60%. A survey conducted last June indicated that 50% of people in Gaza want to leave the area.
Meanwhile, in the eastern parts of Gaza City – the areas most affected by Israeli attacks – reconstruction is only just beginning, even a year later. And while millions of people are struggling to make ends meet, the international aid promised to Gaza at the Cairo Conference in the fall of 2014 continues to progress slowly.
Not only is there socio-economic instability, but the political situation in Gaza shows no signs of improvement, with reconciliation efforts between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas repeatedly failing. Although the fighting has temporarily ceased for the past year, no one can be sure how long peace will last in the Gaza Strip or what the future holds for its people.
