Some new rice varieties in the summer-autumn crop 2015

(Baonghean) - In order to quickly introduce new rice varieties with high yield and quality, especially purebred rice varieties, in the 2015 Summer-Autumn crop, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has allowed a number of companies producing and trading plant varieties to coordinate with localities in the province to build a model for testing a number of new rice varieties. Through testing, a number of varieties have good prospects, suitable for the production conditions of Nghe An.

Improved Khang Dan rice variety

The variety was tested by Nghe An Plant Seed Center in collaboration with Vietnam Agricultural Academy, building a model with a scale of 16 hectares in 5 districts: Hung Nguyen, Nam Dan, Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Yen Thanh. The production model in Nam Tan commune (Nam Dan) with a scale of 4 hectares achieved good results, the efficiency of the model was quite high:

- Sowing date: May 11, 2015, transplanting date: May 23, 2015, flowering time of the variety is around July 13 - 16, short growing time: 87 days.

- The yield of the variety reaches 6 tons/ha, exceeding the control Khang Dan 18 by 6-8%.

- The improved Khang Dan variety has strong seedlings and good tillering. In the summer-autumn crop of 2015, due to prolonged drought, compared to seedlings of other varieties, the improved Khang Dan variety developed better. The variety blooms freely, blooms in a concentrated manner, and has a short flowering time (3 - 4 days). The variety has an average plant height. It is resistant to pests and diseases and is relatively disease-free. The rice quality is quite good, soft and delicious.

Rice variety M1-ND

Purebred rice variety M1-ND was put into production by Cuong Tan Company Limited in collaboration with Dien Chau District Agricultural Extension Station on a scale of 2 hectares in Dien Tan Commune. M1-ND variety has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for trial production. Results of the model implementation in Dien Tan Commune (Dien Chau) in the summer-autumn crop of 2015:

- Sowing date: May 12, 2015, transplanting date: May 28, 2015, growth period 105 days.

- M1-ND rice variety tillers strongly and concentratedly (8-9 heads), high number of effective heads, strong plant, good lodging resistance. The leaves are strong and sturdy. The panicles are large and long, high percentage of solid grains. The variety is resistant to summer-autumn leaf blight, not infected with brown planthopper, slightly infected with blast and brown spot. White rice, good quality, sticky, delicious, rich flavor.

- The yield of M1-ND variety reaches 73.5 quintals/ha, higher than the control variety Khang Dan 18 and many varieties being grown in the district.

ADI 30 rice variety

The purebred rice variety ADI 30 was selected by ADI Agricultural Investment, Trade and Development Joint Stock Company from the purebred rice gene pool imported from China through pedigree selection. In the summer-autumn crop of 2015, the company cooperated with the Department of Agriculture of Dien Chau district to build a demonstration model in Dien Lien commune (Dien Chau). The ADI 30 variety has been accepted by the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for registration of new plant variety protection and allowed for DUS testing. Results of the model implementation:

- Sowing date: May 13 - 15, 2015, transplanting date: May 27-29, 2015, flowering date: July 25, 2015. Growth period: 102 days.

- ADI 30 rice variety has a high germination rate, the plants grow evenly and strongly, and have good tillering ability. The plants grow well, the flag leaves are strong, and the flowers bloom. The stems and leaves are neat, the plants are strong, and they resist lodging well. ADI 30 rice variety has an average height compared to other local varieties. The rice is clear, delicious, soft and sticky.

- The yield of the variety is 66.4 quintals/ha, equivalent to the BC15 rice variety currently grown in the area.

Rice varieties LH12, LH13, AN1

The rice varieties LH12, LH13, AN1 were tested by Nghe An Agricultural Materials Joint Stock Corporation in collaboration with the Center for Transfer of Agricultural Science Advances - Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the South Central Coast Agricultural Science and Technology Institute to evaluate the adaptability of the varieties in Nghe An as well as their resistance, growth and development, rice quality, etc. The total production area of ​​the above rice varieties in the summer-autumn crop of 2015 at Kim Lien - Nam Dan Seed Farm is 11 hectares, of which LH12 is 6 hectares, LH 13 is 3 hectares, AN1 is 2 hectares. The LH12 rice variety has been recognized for trial production by the Department of Crop Production - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

- Sowing date: June 4, 2015, transplanting date: June 16, 2015, harvest on September 8 - 18, 2015 depending on the variety. Growth period of LH12 variety is 104 days, LH13 variety is 94 days, AN1 variety is 94 days.

- LH12 rice variety has average height, average lodging resistance, large and long flag leaves, fully flowering. Average resistance to pests and diseases, slightly infected with leaf blight, brown spot, stem borer, leaf roller. In particular, LH12 rice variety has high quality rice, delicious, sticky, rich flavor.

LH13 rice variety belongs to the group of short-term varieties, grows well, and is resistant to pests and diseases. The panicles are long, the panicles are high in neck escape, the plant is strong, and it is resistant to lodging. The rice quality is high, the grains are long, white, and clear, the rice is delicious and sticky, and has a strong aroma.

AN1 rice variety belongs to the group of short-term varieties, compact in shape, and strong in plant. The variety has average tillering ability, large and long flag leaves, and a durable green color. AN1 rice variety is quite free of pests and diseases, in the summer-autumn crop it is only slightly infected with brown spot disease and stem borer.

- Yield: In the 2015 summer-autumn crop, LH12 rice variety yielded 55.4 quintals/ha, LH13 rice variety yielded 58.7 quintals/ha, AN1 rice variety yielded 63.5 quintals/ha, all higher than the control variety AC5.

Fragrant rice variety SV181 (Sao Viet 181):

- The variety was selected and created by Quang Binh Seed Company Limited and put into production testing from 2012 - 2014. SV181 is a short-term fragrant rice variety, high quality yield, delicious rice, wide adaptability, high tolerance to intensive cultivation.

- Rice variety SV181 has a short growing period in the summer-autumn crop of about 90 - 95 days.

- Plant height 95 - 105 cm, good growth, strong and concentrated branching, light green upright leaves, good resistance to lodging.

- Good quality rice, delicious, clear rice, soft rice, rich rice, light aroma.

- Yield in summer-autumn crop at testing sites is from 65 - 70 tons/ha.

In summary: For the improved Khang Dan rice variety with a short growing period of about 90 days, the SV181 variety with a growing period of over 90 days can be arranged into the variety structure for the summer-autumn flood-prone areas. The LH12 and SV181 varieties have good quality, aroma, and delicious sticky rice that can be included in the structure of quality rice varieties.

To accurately confirm the potential of the varieties in the coming time, it is recommended that localities continue to coordinate with seed production and trading companies to continue conducting testing and demonstration models to monitor and evaluate the true nature of the varieties. At the same time, it is recommended that seed production and trading companies complete the dossier to report to the competent authority for consideration and recognition of new varieties, creating sufficient legal basis for introducing varieties into the production structure in Nghe An.
