A man identified by Thai police as one of the leaders of anti-government protests in the country was shot dead on January 26 when violent clashes erupted as protesters tried to prevent early voting in the election scheduled for February 2.

Piya Utayo, a spokesperson for the Thai National Police, identified the person shot dead as Suthin Taratin.
