Mourinho: 'Man Utd is a big club, but there is no big team'

The Portuguese coach admitted that Man Utd's current squad cannot compete with Man City for the Premier League title.

Man Utd have 43 points after 20 rounds in the 2017-2018 Premier League. The gap between them and the top team Man City is 12 points. If Pep Guardiola's team wins the late match against Newcastle tonight, December 27, the gap between the two teams will increase to 15 points and the chance for Man Utd to reach the Premier League title is extremely small.

Analyzing the current situation, Mourinho said:''I know what a big club is. A big club and a big team are two completely different concepts. When you talk about a club like Man Utd, do you think Milan is as big as us? Do you think Real Madrid or Inter Milan is as big as us? There are many big clubs in the world. And when you talk about the responsibility of winning the Premier League, do Tottenham, Arsenal or Chelsea have the responsibility? Tottenham don't have the history like us.''.

He continued:''Man Utd are in the second year of rebuilding a team that is not among the best in the world. Man City have bought defenders for the price of strikers, so when you talk about a big club, you talk about the history of the club.''

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Coach Guardiola has asked Man City to spend 483 million dollars to strengthen the squad, including 162 million to buy three full-backs. Meanwhile, Man Utd spent 383 million for Mourinho to recruit seven players.''That's not enough. The price a big club pays for players is different to a smaller club. Clubs with a glorious history are often punished by that history. The current squad at Man Utd is doing everything they can and doing it well,'' he said.
