Previously, the movie Red Rain also caused a stir when it reached the 100 billion VND mark after only 3 days of release, comparable to the speed of Ly Hai's "blockbuster" (Flip Side 7: A Wish) or Tran Thanh(The Panther Quartet). This is also the 10th Vietnamese film of the year to surpass the hundred billion mark, contributing to affirming the strong explosion of domestic cinema.
Mr. Dang Tran Cuong - Director of the Department of Cinema - affirmed that the success ofRed Rainis a "golden opportunity" to build a sustainable development strategy for war and revolutionary films:“The key lies in a good script, high-quality film and professional distribution and promotion.”
Red Rain is based on the work of the same name by writer Chu Lai, directed by Dang Thai Huyen, set in the fiery summer of 1972. When the liberation army recaptured Quang Tri, the US and the Republic of Vietnam army launched a fierce counterattack to retake the ancient citadel, with the goal of gaining an advantage at the negotiating table.
The story revolves around Cuong (Do Nhat Hoang) - a Conservatory student who gave up the opportunity to study abroad to join the army. Cuong fights in a squad consisting of Ta, Binh, Tu, Hai, Sen - soldiers from many different hometowns, with different personalities but the same ideal of peace.
Each battle gradually depleted the army, leaving behind haunting footage: images of soldiers buried in the ground, their bodies no longer intact, or scenes of crossing rivers that brought tears to the eyes of the audience. The image of "red rain" is a metaphor for the losses and sacrifices of a generation of young people who love their homeland and country like flesh and blood.
Red Rainscored points thanks to the 50-hectare studio setting, elaborate staging, realistic effects, and emotional acting by the young cast. When staging, the crew kept the heroic spirit of the original novel but restrained the literary quality, adding more combat elements.
