Floods in Pakistan kill 53 people.
The Pakistani authorities have had to mobilize the military to help deal with the flooding.
On August 5th, an official from Pakistan's National Disaster Management Agency stated that heavy rains over the past three days had caused flash floods, sweeping away many homes and killing 53 people.
Brig. Kamran Zia, a member of the National Disaster Management Agency, said that local authorities have mobilized the military to participate in rescue efforts to deal with the situation.
Zia said the flood-related deaths included: 12 in northwestern Pakistan, 8 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 3 in the disputed Kashmir region, 12 in Punjab province, 10 in Baluchistan, and 8 in southern Sindh province.
According to authorities, severe flooding occurred in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, due to a malfunction in the drainage system in the southern part of the city.
Pakistan frequently faces flooding during the monsoon season, which typically occurs in July and August each year.
In 2010, the country experienced its worst floods in 66 years when floodwaters inundated one-fifth of Pakistan's territory, killing 1,700 people and affecting the lives of more than 20 million.
