Former agricultural extension officer sentenced for buying drugs to treat illness

The first instance trial of defendant Vy Van Ma (born in 1962), residing in Keo Luc 2 village, Pha Danh commune, Ky Son district, Nghe An province (former agricultural extension officer of Pha Danh commune) was held.prosecutefor the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics" was opened on the afternoon of November 29.

According to the indictment: Around the beginning of September 2021, Vy Van Ma went to herd buffaloes in Keo Luc 2 village, Pha Danh commune, Ky Son district, and met a Mong man he did not know. Here, Ma asked to buy 20 (twenty) synthetic drug pills from this man for 1,000,000 VND with the intention of using them to treat rheumatism. After buying the drugs, Ma brought them home to hide and gradually used up all 11 synthetic drug pills.
At around 7:00 p.m. on September 30, while Ma was at home, the Ky Son District Police task force discovered and caught him red-handed, seizing the remaining drugs. The amount of drugs seized from the defendant was determined to weigh 0.9 grams.
At the trial, the panel of judges stated: The defendant himself is a cadre and party member who understands the law, but he was not exemplary and lived a dissolute life, which led to his addiction. The defendant's statement that he bought drugs to treat his illness was just an excuse for his wrongdoings. Considering the defendant's many achievements in his work and his family's contributions to the revolution, the panel sentenced defendant Vy Van Ma to 20 months in prison.
