Heavy rain, flooded winter crops, farmers suffer heavy losses

*According to the report of the Department of AgricultureQuynh Luu district, in 2 days of heavy rain, the entire vegetable and winter crop area of the people was flooded. On the morning of October 4, the measured rainfall was 130mm, this is considered the longest heavy rain since the beginning of the season in the area.
In the coastal areas, heavy rains flooded more than 150 hectares of newly planted vegetables. Communes with large floods include Quynh Minh with about 50 hectares, Quynh Luong with 80 hectares, Quynh Bang with 30 hectares...
As of October 4, the entire district had planted more than 1,000 hectares. Due to prolonged heavy rains, about 130 hectares of corn in the communes of Quynh Dien, Quynh Giang, Quynh Tam, and Tan Son were flooded.

Mr. Dau Duc Nam - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said that heavy rain is forecast to continue in the coming days. In order to overcome the damage, the district has directed agricultural officers of communes to regularly update weather information; actively dredge canals, clear water flows to drain water in vegetable and winter crop fields to avoid local flooding. For vegetable areas that can be harvested, people are directed to take advantage of the time to go to the fields to harvest quickly, not letting waterlogging cause damage.

Currently, many corn areas have been washed away by water, and some that have not been washed away have rotten roots; cucumber areas will have sun when the water recedes, causing the plants to rot and die.
Faced with that situation, the locality mobilized machinery to focus on clearing the flow to prevent flooding; and encouraged people to take measures to handle the cucumber area.

According to Mr. Phan Viet Ha - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Minh Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh: Up to now, Minh Thanh Commune has planted 90 hectares of corn. Of which, over 20 hectares are contracted by Minh Thanh Agricultural Cooperative in coordination with the animal feed factory from production to harvest, but now heavy rain has completely damaged the flood; if the rain continues, it will be a total loss. According to calculations, the cost of producing 1 sao of corn is about 1 million VND, giving an income of 8 - 10 million VND/sao.
