The Prime Minister has just approved the national program to ensure safe water supply for the 2016-2025 period with the goal of achieving 95-100% of the population having access to clean, hygienic water by 2025.
According to the Prime Minister's decision, the above program will be implemented in urban areas and concentrated rural residential areas of provinces and centrally-run cities nationwide from 2016 to 2025.
The general objective of the program is to ensure safe water supply to manage risks and overcome possible incidents from water sources, water treatment facilities and water transmission and distribution systems to customers; ensure continuous water supply, sufficient water quantity, maintain adequate pressure, water quality meets regulations, contributing to improving the quality of life and protecting human health.

The program strives to achieve by 2020, the rate of population provided with clean, hygienic water reaching 90 - 95%; the rate of urban water supply systems with safe water supply plans established and implemented reaching 45%; the rate of rural water supply systems with safe water supply plans established and implemented reaching 35%; and the amount of untreated urban domestic wastewater before being discharged into the environment to be reduced to 80 - 85%.
By 2025, the rate of population with access to clean, hygienic water will reach 95-100%; the rate of rural water supply systems with safe water supply plans will reach 50%; the amount of untreated urban wastewater before being discharged into the environment will be reduced to 70%.
To achieve the above goals, the program will develop and perfect policies and mechanisms on ensuring safe water supply; managing the exploitation, use and protection of water resources; applying information technology to ensure safe water supply; improving capacity on safe water supply; communicating to raise public awareness...
According to the report of the natural resources, environment and health sector, the rate of people using clean water is currently low, especially in rural areas, this rate is mostly below 50%.
Even in the two largest cities of the country, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, many people in rural and suburban areas still have to use water that does not meet quality standards.
While Ho Chi Minh City aims to have 100% of households using clean water by the end of 2017, Hanoi aims to eliminate 100% of people using substandard and unsafe water by 2020.
