(Baonghean.vn) - Recognizing agricultural production as a key economic objective, in recent years, under the correct guidance of local authorities, people in Mai Hung ward (Hoang Mai town) have learned to apply scientific and technological advancements to rationally transform the structure of crops and livestock, achieving high economic efficiency.
Ms. Tran Thi Phuong's household in Block 14, Mai Hung Ward, owns over 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of garden land. Previously, they only planted a few miscellaneous fruit trees, resulting in low yields. In 2014, she invested over 200 million VND to build pig pens for raising both meat pigs and breeding pigs. Currently, the pens always house around 30 meat pigs raised in staggered batches and 8 breeding sows that produce over 150 piglets annually.

In particular, the shrimp farming area alone covers 80 hectares and applies the VietGAP-compliant farming model for high productivity.

A typical example is Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tinh's household in Block 13, Mai Hung Ward, which owns 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of elevated land. Previously, he only grew corn in the spring and summer-autumn seasons, resulting in low yields. After receiving training on the application of scientific and technological advancements, he chose the CP999 hybrid corn variety, achieving a yield of 4 quintals per sao in the main season and 3.5 quintals per sao in the off-season. After harvesting the corn, he planted winter vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and bok choy. Thanks to proper care, effective pest and disease prevention, and a stable market, each hectare of land yields an income of 130 million VND per year.

The crop rotation structure has also been adjusted to suit local production conditions. Mai Hung Ward has over 400 hectares of land for growing various agricultural crops. Previously, it mainly produced two crops per year, with an income value of only over 50 million VND/hectare. Faced with this situation, the Ward Party Committee held a meeting and assigned the Ward's Agricultural Committee to conduct a survey of the land's current status and increase the number of crops per year. Currently, farmers combine two rice crops with one corn crop; on higher ground, they plant two corn crops with one vegetable crop, and the land is intensively cultivated year-round.
As a result, agricultural production accounts for 40% of the ward's economic structure. The annual economic growth rate reaches 14%, per capita income reaches 29 million VND/year, and the poverty rate, which was 10.3% in 2014, has now decreased to 6.8%. The material and spiritual lives of the people have continuously improved, contributing to the transformation of the new urban landscape.
Mr. Van Duc Luc, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Mai Hung Ward, said: To implement the key program on agricultural development, the ward has issued mechanisms and policies to encourage farmers to invest in production development, apply high technology, ensure food safety and hygiene, and consolidate land plots to improve productivity and product quality. At the same time, cooperatives have been tasked with selecting high-yielding and high-quality plant, animal, and aquatic species for mass production. |
