According to PhoneArena, it is not yet clear in which cases the new identity check will be applied, for example, it will apply to suspicious activities in user accounts or become a regular option for future logins. For now, the main goal of this new system is to protect user data from third parties.
Some users reported on Twitter that they encountered a new Facebook prompt asking them to take a photo that clearly shows their face, accompanied by a promise that Facebook will delete the photo from its servers once the user's identity is determined.
In a statement to Wired, a Facebook spokesperson said the security feature is intended to help the company capture suspicious activity at various interaction points on the service, including creating an account, sending friend requests, setting up ad payments, and creating or editing ads.
The method of verifying user identity will be automated, but it is one of several options Facebook will use to authenticate users and detect suspicious activity. However, the review system is still unclear, as Facebook declined to share more about the issues./.
