US imposes sanctions on State Duma deputies

(Baonghean.vn) - The US Treasury Department has blacklisted 6 individuals.State Duma deputies, including five deputies from the Republic of Crimea and one deputy from Sevastopol.

The US said these politicians were involved in actions “aimed at undermining the democratic process and political institutions in Ukraine, as well as threatening the security, stability and sovereignty of this country”.

The US Treasury Department stressed that these sanctions are related to Russia's annexation of Crimea, and will only stop when the peninsula returns to Ukrainian control.

Mr. John Smith, Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, US Department of the Treasury, said that these moves demonstrate close coordination, as well as the strength of the US-EU partnership to pressure Russia to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and security.

Currently, any assets of individuals on the “blacklist” and accounts that the United States can find within its jurisdiction are blocked throughout the United States. Accordingly, American companies, organizations and individuals are prohibited from transacting with them.

Earlier, similar sanctions were imposed by the EU against Crimean deputies in the State Duma. So far, the EU “black list” includes 157 citizens and 37 organizations of Russia and Ukraine. These individuals and organizations are banned from entering the territory and banking system of the EU.
