US imposes new sanctions on Russia
The United States has imposed sanctions on three Russian and Ukrainian individuals and nine entities over Russia's annexation of Crimea and human rights abuses.

According to the US Treasury Department, this decision is to punish Russia for annexing the Crimean peninsula in 2014 as well as supporting pro-Russian rebel groups in eastern Ukraine.
The Trump administration has been criticized for being too soft on Russia and there are efforts in the US Congress to impose additional sanctions on Russia over its role in the 2016 US presidential election.
