The US is protecting bats that are beneficial in agriculture.

Although bats still frighten many people, they are beneficial creatures in agriculture, considered a friend to farmers. Therefore, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working to protect these beneficial bat species and their habitats in Texas.

Bracken Cave in Texas is home to the world's largest bat population. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is currently working with local organizations in an effort to protect the habitat of this beneficial species.

Bats offer many benefits to farmers, as they help pollinate crops, and bats are also a valuable resource. Merlin Tuttle of the International Bat Conservation Agency placed a Mexican tailless bat and explained to reporters the benefits of this species. “In one night, this bat can catch more than 40 corn borers and moths in nearby farmlands. Among these moths, some can lay up to a thousand eggs.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is currently working with farmers to conserve the habitat of bats, as well as their water and food sources.

Merlin Tuttle of the International Bat Conservation Agency said: “Farmers can protect clean water sources, maintain fences and forest edges to provide habitat for bats, and protect roosting sites such as caves or old mines.”

Many organic farmers are increasingly relying on bats for pest management. They nest for around 2,000 bats at a time in their orchards. Some have successfully attracted bats and no longer need to use pesticides.

Protecting bats not only helps maintain ecosystem diversity but also protects crops.
