Two B-1B bombers, escorted by US and South Korean aircraft, flew over Osan Air Base, 120km from the North Korean border. The two B-1Bs then returned to the US Air Force base on Guam, without landing in South Korea.
The US often sends these advanced vehicles to South Korea whenever the situation on the Korean peninsula is tense, which has been common since the 1953 armistice.
South Korea has no nuclear weapons and has traditionally relied on its ally the United States to protect it from the threat from North Korea. Washington has stationed about 28,000 troops in South Korea and 10,000 in Japan.
North Korea, in particular, sees the US presence in the region as a threat, and often uses this as a reason for its nuclear development program.
Last week's nuclear test was the most powerful to date. North Korea claims the warheads could reach the United States.
