(Baonghean.vn) - The battle on Ukraine's southern front is fierce. Experts say that the Ukrainian Armed Forces made a serious mistake in trying to break through Russia's defense line, thus suffering heavy losses.

Colonel Douglas MacGregor, a former adviser to the Pentagon chief, said the Ukrainian army made a serious mistake in trying to break through Russia's defenses in the south.

“It seems inconceivable to President Putin and his generals why Ukrainian forces would recklessly launch a counterattack against Russian fortifications in the south,” said Colonel MacGregor.

The New York Times reported that the number of soldiers wounded in the Ukrainian army's counterattack was huge. Medical stations near the front line continuously received a large number of soldiers wounded in the war, especially many with injuries caused by mine explosions.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a meeting with military officials that in July, Ukraine lost more than 20,800 soldiers, exactly 20,824 people, and 2,227 weapons of various types.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in all directions per day amounted to 810 combat aircraft.

Mr. Shoigu added that in July, Kiev lost 10 Leopard tanks, 11 Bradley fighting vehicles, 40 M777 artillery systems, and 50 self-propelled guns provided by the West.

"It is clear that Western weapons aid does not help Ukraine succeed on the battlefield but only prolongs the conflict," Minister Shoigu said.

Minister Shoigu said that the Russian army is attacking from all directions on the Ukrainian battlefield, focusing on eroding Kiev's combat capabilities. Joint combat groups continue to operate in all directions, focusing on weakening the enemy's capabilities.

Given the serious losses and failure of the counteroffensive, Oleg Soskin, former adviser to Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, called on President Volodymyr Zelensky to start peace negotiations with the Russian leader.

“Mr. Zelensky, we need to stop the fire and sit down at the negotiating table with President Putin,” Oleg Soskin urged.

According to this expert, the Ukrainian army is currently suffering huge losses in personnel and equipment. At the same time, they have not achieved any success in the counterattack. In addition, NATO weapons are not enough for new attacks.
