The Level 3 travel advisory does not specify a specific terrorist threat but warns Americans to be vigilant in public places and crowded places, according toAP.
"Although security for the World Cup will be extensive, terrorists may seek to attack event venues such as stadiums, Fan Fest viewing areas, tourist areas, transportation hubs and other public places," the advisory reads.
The US also warned about the situation of Russian law enforcement officers.“harassment and extortion.” The department warned that Russian officials often delayed US government assistance to detainees.
The Russian government has limited the US government's ability to assist its citizens after the US was forced to reduce the number of diplomatic staff in the country at Russia's request.
Russia has made security a top priority during the World Cup. It has tightened background checks on fans and issued Fan ID smart cards, closed ports near cities hosting the event, and protected venues with anti-aircraft missiles.
Alexei Lavrishchev, head of security for the World Cup, said earlier that the country's security forces were ready to thwart any threats during the football tournament.
