According to the announcement, the sanctions target the commanders of the Border Police and Military Forces; the 33rd and 99th Infantry Divisions and the commanders of these two divisions.
These military commanders and units are accused of engaging in human rights abuses in campaigns targeting the Rohingya ethnic minority community.
Accordingly, all assets or interests of these subjects within the jurisdiction of the US will be frozen, and US citizens and businesses will not be allowed to participate in transactions with these subjects.
Last June, Canada, in coordination with the European Union (EU), also imposed sanctions on seven Myanmar generals that Ottawa and Brussels said were involved in human rights violations against the Rohingya people in Rakhine state.
Accordingly, 5 army generals, 1 border force commander and 1 police commander were imposed travel bans and had their assets frozen.
About 700,000 Rohingya people were forced to leave Rakhine state to seek refuge in Bangladesh after Myanmar security forces launched a military campaign in the state since August 2017./.
