On May 21, Russia's news agency reported that the country's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, wrote on his Twitter page after a Security Council meeting on Venezuela that the US had blocked a statement of the UN Security Council initiated by Russia to condemn the interference in Venezuela's internal affairs and violation of its sovereignty.
According to the Russian diplomat, the draft text contained “no accusations, but only support for the basic general content”. He wrote: “It was killed by the US delegation to the UN in just 9 minutes from the start of the silent procedure (automatic adoption of a document when no one objects). Is there any doubt about the level of “constructiveness” of the US position on Venezuela?
Earlier, on May 3, Venezuelan officials said they had uncovered a plot by a group of mercenaries from Colombia to stage a coup in Venezuela and assassinate President Nicolas Maduro.
Two of the arrested men were American citizens. Maduro showed them their identification cards in a televised address. One of them, during questioning, said he had been tasked with taking control of the airport and taking the Venezuelan leader there, where he would then be flown to the United States.
Following the incident, US President Donald Trump asserted that Washington had nothing to do with the individuals detained in Venezuela. In addition, he said that if the US had planned such an operation, it would not have hidden anything.
