(Baonghean.vn) - Putting aside nuclear weapons, Russia's submarine fleet is the greatest threat to the United States in particular and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in general.

The American magazine Newsweek stated that Russia's submarine fleet is considered a formidable force. The US and its allies are seeking to "gain the upper hand" in the arms race, because Russia "has the capability to strike" anywhere.

NATO is increasingly concerned that Russian attack submarines, ballistic missile submarines, and specialized submersibles could be used to threaten or attack its economic and military infrastructure. This concern has been particularly heightened since Russia annexed Crimea. Russia deploys submarines more frequently, on longer missions, and their activities near critical underwater infrastructure are increasing. Therefore, detecting and tracking these submarines in the vast ocean is a challenging task for NATO.

Currently, Russia's Yasen-class submarines are considered exceptionally quiet and carry land-attack cruise missiles that NATO commanders fear could be used to strike US or European infrastructure if they enter the Atlantic in the event of a war.
