US announces forensic examination results of remains received from North Korea
(Baonghean.vn) - On August 1, a US official cited a preliminary forensic report saying that more than 50 wooden coffins returned to the US by North Korea last week appeared to contain remains from the 1950-1953 Korean War and were likely American.

A US military transport plane on July 27 carried the remains of soldiers from the North Korean city of Wonsan, the first step in implementing the agreement reached at the historic summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump on June 12.
“There is no reason to doubt that these remains are related to losses during the Korean War,” John Byrd, director of analysis for the US Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), told reporters at Osan Air Base in South Korea, just before the remains were scheduled to be flown to Hawaii for analysis and identification.
“Metal tags attached to the necks of American soldiers” for identification purposes were also returned by North Korea, Byrd said. The soldiers’ families have been notified, although it is unclear whether the soldier’s remains were among those recovered, Byrd said.
Analysts say that the exact identification of these remains could take days, even decades. The commitment to return the remains of soldiers killed in the Korean War is considered a goodwill gesture by the North Korean leader at the summit in Singapore, and is the most specific agreement reached between the two sides./.
