The US is sending a chemical and biological defense battalion to South Korea.
The Voice of Russia reported that the United States has once again deployed a chemical, biological, and radiological defense battalion to South Korea.
This unit was withdrawn from South Korea by the US in 2004. According to US military sources in Tokyo, Japan, the unit's flag-raising ceremony took place on the morning of April 4th at a military base near Seoul.
This battalion is tasked with surveying and decontamination in case North Korea uses weapons of mass destruction to attack South Korea. The U.S. Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Defense Battalion has approximately 250 personnel.
According to the 2012 South Korean Defense White Paper, North Korea possesses between 2.5 and 5 tons of chemical warfare agents.
This document asserts that Pyongyang has the potential to produce biological weapons, particularly agents causing anthrax and smallpox.
