The US is building the world's largest digital camera.
Astronomers in California are building the world's largest digital camera to be mounted on the giant LSST telescope in Chile. The camera's mission is to take panoramic images of parts of the universe to record unusual movements or phenomena.
The two-story-tall camera, housed in a separate room at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, is made up of 20 boxes, each containing a 144-megapixel camera—six times the resolution of a typical high-end digital camera.

The camera's components were built in several different locations: the sensor at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and the optics at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and the filters were imported from France. However, assembly will take place at SLAC in two years.

For the camera to work and focus correctly, every single part must be placed precisely within 2 microns, equivalent to 1/20th the thickness of a human hair. In addition, when entering the camera room, scientists must wear protective clothing to avoid contaminating the equipment there.
It is expected that by 2020 astronomers will be able to use this giant device to study the universe.
