The French government on October 26 announced a three-month ban on the use of a widely used pesticide in many areas of the country, after recording many cases of health problems among people in the western part of the country recently.

The ban comes as metam sodium, found in Vapam and Sectagom pesticides, is suspected of causing eye irritation and difficulty breathing in many people, especially those living near Angers, an area that produces a large amount of lamb's lettuce, also known as cornsalad. Salad is a very popular dish in France. To prevent pests on vegetable crops, agricultural farm owners often spread a quantity of metam sodium powder on the soil.
