September 11, 2015 09:16

The Flight 93 National Memorial in southwestern Pennsylvania has just opened a new visitor center that tells the story of the crew and passengers of Air USA Flight 93, which was attacked by Al Qaeda on September 11, 2001.

Located near Shanksville, the center opened at 10:00 AM on September 10th (local time, which is 10:00 PM on September 11th in Vietnam). Sally Jewell, the US Secretary of the Interior; Tom Wolf, the Governor of Pennsylvania; and Paul Murdoch, the center's architect, along with many others, will be present at the inauguration ceremony.

The new center features a wall displaying photos and names of the 40 victims, a Memorial Square, and a stone marking the crash site.

The final flight path of Flight 93 is commemorated by a dark granite-paved road that divides the new National Memorial Center. The building sits atop a hill overlooking the crash site.

Flight 93 took off from Newark, New Jersey, and was scheduled to land in San Francisco. Approximately 40 minutes after takeoff, the plane was hijacked by Al Qaeda.

Inside the center are 10 exhibition rooms depicting the passengers and crew who decided to storm the cockpit in an attempt to regain control of the aircraft. There are also photographs of the victims, personal belongings, video footage, and various interactive exhibits.

At one exhibition booth, visitors can view the rear of a Boeing 757-200, similar to the aircraft used by American airlines, and thus get a sense of what passengers experience. Another booth displays a seating chart for passengers.

On September 11th, the memorial service begins at 9:45 AM. At 10:03 AM, the exact time the plane crashed, the names of the passengers and crew will be read aloud and bells will be rung in their memory.

Flight 93 was one of four planes attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, and one crashed into the Pentagon. It is believed that Flight 93 was targeted at the U.S. Capitol building but crashed off course. In total, nearly 3,000 people died in these terrorist attacks.
