According to The Hill on March 17, the US military is said to be planning to maintain nearly 1,000 troops in Syria, several months after US President Donald Trump announced that he would withdraw all US forces from this West Asian country.

Citing several US officials, the Wall Street Journal reported on March 17 that the Trump administration plans to continue supporting Kurdish fighters in Syria.

The officials added that the plan could maintain up to 1,000 US troops across the Middle Eastern country, but said the exact number of troops would still need to be determined.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US will begin withdrawing hundreds of troops after defeating the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Iraq and Syria.

President Trump has repeatedly declared since December 2018 that the terrorist organization IS has been completely defeated in the region. However, members of Congress and US officials have maintained that the terrorist organization IS has not been completely defeated.
