The United States, backed by its allies, is betting on a military response to the alleged gas attack by Syrian government forces, which Damascus sees as a fabrication to slow its advance. Russia, meanwhile, has also warned of a military strike on Syria, saying it will not hesitate to retaliate.
Faced with the above tense developments, Mr. Marcus Papadopoulos, Editor-in-Chief of Politics First magazine, believes that there is no evidence to prove that Damascus was behind the chemical attack in Douma, and that the US and its allies are using this story as an excuse to increase their dominance in the Middle East.
“The US and its allies’ accusations that the Syrian government used chemical weapons in Douma are extremely serious, and I support the decision of Russia and the Syrian government to invite inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). This is a responsible action, as it is in accordance with international law. However, unfortunately, the US and its allies, especially the UK, consider themselves judges, juries and executors. They have not provided any evidence to support the hypothesis that the Syrian government used chemical weapons... Therefore, we need to be extremely cautious about what the US and the UK are claiming,” the expert said.
The expert also stressed that US accusations against Syria could provoke a conflict with Russia, which could escalate into a nuclear war and engulf the entire planet.
The analyst asserted that Syria has in fact destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile. Therefore, the criticism should be directed at various terrorist organizations that are plotting to push the US into the conflict in Syria. Mr. Papadopoulos said that the US involvement in the war in Syria is aimed at ending Russia's influence and power in the Middle East. Therefore, Russia needs to respond to any US military attack in Syria, otherwise Moscow's credibility in the world will be weakened and the door will be wide open for the US to intervene more directly in Syria.
Meanwhile, Mr. Brent Budowsky, a columnist for The Hill magazine, commented that the US "never stands alone" in maintaining its stance of accusing the Syrian government of being behind the chemical attack in Douma.
“The US is joining many countries in Europe and even the Middle East in criticizing Syria. This is not a matter of jumping to conclusions, but rather international experts have long believed that Syria is to blame,” said the expert. Budowsky expressed skepticism about the possibility of the US withdrawing from Syria, predicting that Washington will engage in some form of military retaliation, after imposing sanctions on Moscow and Damascus./.
