The US launched intense airstrikes against ISIS forces besieging the town of Kobane.
Coalition fighter jets led by the US carried out 21 airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) militants near Kobane on October 13-14, amid signs that these attacks "slowed" IS's advance toward the Syrian border town.
A statement from the US Central Command said that in one of the most intense airstrikes to date against militants besieging Kobane, coalition aircraft destroyed two ISIS warehouses, a building, a truck, two transport vehicles, two residential buildings, and damaged several other targets.

A separate airstrike in eastern Syria destroyed a small oil refinery.
The statement emphasized that “there are indications that the airstrikes have slowed IS’s advance around Kobane. However, the security situation on the ground remains constantly changing as IS seeks to seize territory while Kurdish forces continue to hold their ground.”
The airstrikes were carried out to “prevent” IS’s reinforcement and resupply efforts, as well as to stop the group from “concentrating its offensive power” on Kurdish-controlled areas in Kobane.
