US opposes Kurdish referendum for independence from Iraq
The US and the United Nations have spoken out against a referendum being held by Iraqi Kurds to decide the future of the Kurdistan region.

This referendum had about 3.3 million participants, reaching 72.16%. The announcement from the Supreme Independent Commission for Referendums and Elections in Kurdistan showed that after counting 282,000 votes, about 9% of the voters, more than 93% supported the idea of independence for this region; 6.71% of voters voted against independence.
Results may change as vote counting continues. Official results will be announced on Thursday (September 28).
The Baghdad government, Iraqi Kurdistan's neighbors, as well as the US and the United Nations have spoken out against the referendum.
Türkiye and Iran have begun military exercises on their borders in the region, while Iran has closed its airspace to air traffic.
