He told reporters it was "possible" he could appoint someone before May 19, before his first foreign trip.
President Trump is now facing backlash after firing Mr Comey, who was investigating allegations of Russian interference in the US election.
Mr Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that he wanted to move quickly on appointing a new FBI director.
"Most of the candidates are well-known people. They've basically been vetted their whole lives," he said.
At the same time, he also added that the search for Comey's replacement is being carried out "urgently": "We are reviewing candidates."
Who will be appointed to replace James Coney remains a hot topic in the United States. Previously, Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and several others were interviewed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on May 13.
Former Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher is reportedly the frontrunner and the first person interviewed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In addition to Fisher, there are about 11 people under consideration for the Senate-confirmed position.
