Venezuelan authorities say they have successfully captured 27 soldiers who were plotting a military coup by kidnapping four officials in the capital Caracas and calling on people to fight to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro. A group of soldiers from the National Guard stole weapons, kidnapped four officials, then attacked a guard post in Cotiza, near the capital Caracas. They posted a video on social media demanding that President Nicolás Maduro step down.
Twenty-five soldiers were captured shortly after the fighting broke out, and two others were captured elsewhere. While the rebellion was quickly crushed, it signaled growing discontent within the armed forces, especially among lower-ranking officers, who had little power to change the economy amid hyperinflation of two million percent, which left food and medicine scarce.
